The Violin in her life lifted her up to the Sky

11/24/2020

By Fernando Adriasola

Is it  possible to feel as if you were touching the sky with your hand? The answer is: maybe, or maybe not. Everybody could say that  feeling as if you were touching the sky with your hand is a kind of those human experiences you can live only a few times in life.

Lynn Petro is currently the Academic Supervisor of Aston International English Academy, but education is not everything in her life. Since she was a little girl, something deeper inside her has been growing up, and that is: music. “The only person on either side of my family that was musical in any way was my dad’s mom. As far as I know, she was the only person who did anything musical. No one else [in her family] does music.”  She is conscious certainly that her music sense has been developed by hearing piano. Indeed, Lynn played a little piano too. She took piano class during middle, high school and college. “There was always music in my house… always!” she said.

An instrument, for a musical kind of person, is always related to inner self. Piano clearly wasn’t her instrument, at least. Her dedication for playing piano would finish with the end of piano classes. Then how did she get into the violin? Yes, the violin!  Somehow, anyone who likes to play an instrument tends to make a choice. The choice is made because the liked instrument has been heard in a piece of recorded music or an orchestra performance. The most liked composers for Lynn are Brahms and Dvorak. There are beautiful parts for violin written by those composers. However, it wasn’t a reason for having chosen and keeping herself identified with the violin.

It is a funny story about how she found the violin as her instrument.  “I started in school; it was 4th grade, which means, like I said, 9 years old. The year before that, with all my classmates, we had been required to take a music test. We’ve got a paper in front of us, but my friend and I didn’t take it seriously at all. We had been just messing around during the test, just playing. So, some time later there came the test results, and they called us all into the office in groups  to tell us about our instruments, and the Music Director said to me, “Oh! Your test is very good! You’re gonna be perfect as a violin player.”  Lynn hadn't understood anything in the test, even not cared about results, but as the time went by, she said, “Ok!  It sounds good! So that is how the violin chose me!” she stated. After she started playing, she discovered how much she liked it.

You can play an instrument as a hobby, as an amateur, or at a professional level. Whatever level you have, it is possible to have fun by playing music anytime. For Lynn, it doesn’t matter if it is at a professional level or not. She always enjoys making music with other people. In fact, she does not like to be the soloist in a piece of music, or concert master, who leads a violin group, or even less, the orchestra’s conductor. She always prefers to play in a group, so she kept herself with the violinists in any orchestra she joined.
Lynn was born in 1969 in Buffalo, New York, a city near Niagara Falls. She moved to Austin, TX in 1993. A few years later, she joined the Austin Civic Orchestra, in which she plays with the first violin group. That was until the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She has been part of different orchestras during her musical life.  Despite that, there was one orchestra which let her live a lot of beautiful moments. Lynn related this remembrance in a way a little bit joyful, proud and nostalgic, all at the same time. It happened at university. “The orchestra,” she says with enthusiasm, “was excellent, fantastic.” It had a very good performance level because it was composed of music majors, music students, amateur musicians. Even more, it was opened for welcoming musicians from outside of the community, so there were music teachers, as well.  Every year they toured around the state, stopping in cities and towns
along the way, ending in New York City.
Lynn continued the story. She was about 21 years old and they came to New York City at the end of a tour. As an orchestra, they would play in a very special place, called “Symphony Space”.  “We played Mahler, the 1st. Symphony, which is very very hard to play. We had practiced as never before. We performed it in very many cities, in halls quite full of people, but now it was different. That was the last night of the tour. We were performing the symphony, and there was a gentleman in the front row who saw my face. I could see him through the corner of my eyes. He was watching so seriously. I couldn’t see if he was very angry or very happy. When the last note of the symphony finished, he flew out of his seat and began clapping crazily. Almost everybody stood up in the room. It was a fantastic performance, I have to say, and later that evening, our conductor came on the bus almost crying. He said that in all his music career, this was one of the top experiences for him ever, and we all felt the same energy at this moment”.
For sure, the memory of these magical moments could be for Lynn’s life, one of those in which you say: it was as if I could touch the sky with my hand. In her case, when “the violin in her life lifted her up to the sky”.

Dr. Adam Hart  |  His life as a Doctor

BY HECTOR KREBBER

When I started the conversation with Dr. Adam Hart this week, he had just finished working with his accountant. I asked if he had spent enough time with his baby during the day. “ No I haven’t, but fortunately, My wife and nanny have been taking care of him,” he said, “I have to work really hard to make sure that he’s going to have a good education.

Hart, who is a good friend of mine, is one of the best eye doctors in Austin with many years of experience in which he has spent most of his life dedicated to study and work in the medical field.
Like many other doctors in the USA, he didn’t have an easy path while he was trying to accomplish his goal to become a doctor. He had to study for many hours and sacrifice things that  other young guys never had to do, and without mentioning the amount of money that was involved. “Even though I had and I still have to renounce certain things, I fully enjoy and love my career.”

Hart has an important eye clinic in North Austin, called “Longhorn Eye Care,” that started to operate one year ago, but despite its short time in the health-care market, the clinic has been gaining a good reputation to the point that the pandemic has not affected it as much economically.
spoke with Adam about his personal life as a doctor and why its so hard to be one of them.

The following is an edited transcript.

Q. At what age did you decide that you wanted to be a doctor?
A: When I was 20 or 21 years old.

Q. Was it a tough decision?
A: It wasn’t a tough decision. I think that about 30 or 40% or the people in my class wanted to study medical engineering, but instead, they ended up applying to medical school. That was something that counsel talked a lot about because we were doing a lot of lab studies. We used diabetes machines, sensors that measure how much oxygen is in your blood. And actually, I applied for an engineering job but wasn’t that excited, so I decided to apply to Med School.

Q. Wre  you interested in another career?
A: Yeah, I probably would have gotten a job as a Medical engineer.

Q. Where could you have gotten a job as an ME?
A: I guess that an example would be like companies that design pacemakers or a company that designs dialysis machines. Out there are many companies that design multiples devices used in surgery.

Q. What university did you study at?
  1. I went to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Q. How was it?
A: I guess the hardest thing was trying was to stay disciplined

Q. What did your parent thing when you told them you wanted to be a doctor?
A: They were pretty happy to hear that. It was a long road to take. They were just discounting how much is involved in getting through that profession.

Q. For how many years did you have to study to get a bachelor’s degree?
A: 4 years of college, I did a year of research after under-grad, 4 years of Med school and then 4 years of residency, for a total of 12 years.

Q. Is someone in your family a doctor?
A: My wife is a doctor with a specialty in dermatology

Q. Did you fail any subject?
A: No

Q. What was the most difficult subject that you had to take ?
A: Fluid mechanics, it is a high level calculus subject.

Q. Did you pass it?
A: Yes, I did pass it.

Q. So, you are good at math?
A: I used to be, not any more. (We both laughed.)

Q. Did you have to do an internship?
A: Yeah, so, after you did four years of medical school, you have to take a serial of exams called USMLE. Then, you can get your medical license, but in order to practice in a specialty, you need to have done the residency.

Q. Does the residency have to be done in a hospital?
A: It’s always in a hospital.

Q. Did you have to study a lot while doing the residency?
A: There is not as much study necessary to do other than making sure that you know what you’re
doing with your patients.

Q. How was your experience as an internist?
A: I didn’t like it at all. I think is an unnecessary year that is part of the training process. But it hasn’t gone away because it’s just a way the system has underpaid doctors working for the hospitals.

Q. Why didn’t you like it?
A: You can quickly get tired because you are kind of stuck there.

Q. Were you supervised by some else during the residency?
A: Yes, you are supervised by an attending physician. They look over your job.

Q. When did you start going to hospitals to practice?
A: You start the second two years.

Q. Did get impressed when you saw a corpse for the first time?
A: No, I wasn’t. I didn’t like the smell. It’s a nasty environment. It smells bad, and you have to wear all the ptotective equipment. I didn’t like it.

Q. When and where did get your first job?
A: I got my first job two weeks after I finished my residency in Northwest Indiana.

Q. How was that new experience?
A: It was a good experience. The only bad thing about that job was that I had to drive around many
offices so I had to do a lot of driving.

Q. Where do you actually work?
A: I work separately in my own eye clinic

Q. Is it true that doctors don’t have enough social life?
A: Well, right now nobody has a social life. It is hard when you are in your training program, and it also depends on your speciality. In my case, I had a lot of free time.

Q. What do you think about the Covid-19 situation?
A: We are going to probably be in some form of quarantine lockdown until we have the vaccine. I think we probably won’t have it until early next year.

Q. Is the USA government taking good care of the virus?
A: I don’t know if you want me to get into that question.

Q. Should we all stay lockdown and for how long?
A: In my opinion, the dedication to stay in lockdown should be made by local governments, and not by the federal government

attack of the hope

Gigi came to my house when he was one month old.  He was really tiny and timid, and he had been having days alone at the corner of my room with dust by the time I gave him kitty’s milk the first time.  He was born in my girlfriend’s house on March 31 when we started entering the lockdown due to COVID-19.  Therefore, his birth became our hope and pleasure in the difficult time. However, our hope was destroyed by “the hope” after “the hope” entered my house.

At first, he didn’t stop meowing because he might have been nervous and anxious in the new environment, and he showed me his small fangs.  He was the first cat for me, so I didn’t have any ideas about what I should have done.   That gave me stress, and the stress had piled up on another stress of the lockdown.  I didn’t realize that we needed to build a good relationship, so my girlfriend gave me a few toys, milk and baby food for the kitty for that.  I could build a great relationship with an animal for the first time.  However, he might not have bullied me enough, and he started treating me as his toy. He scratched my arms and legs with his sharp nails, so I got so many scratches that I could feel coldness from the red skin between the scratches with a wave of goose bumps.  That made me feel miserable.

I thought that I couldn’t become a good owner, but one event gave me hope again.  After I bought the litter box, Gigi started using the box by himself.  I was really surprised, and then I got the confidence to raise him.  Of course, the reality wasn’t so sweet to me. He littered in the box, but he is a cat, so he doesn’t use toilet paper. After doing the toilet, he started walking around my room with poop hanging on his hip, and he was dropping pieces of the stinky poop everywhere.  That would have been funny if it hadn’t been in my room.  Also, he peed on his feet, so the litter sand became solid and hardened on his feet sometimes. He came to my face with those feet that smelled terrible and made me feel like I was standing on a garbage mountain. Yuck.

My life was changed by my little monster.  Every five hours, I made warm milk from powder and paid attention to his whereabouts like a human’s dad.  However, the mischievous Gigi hides very well.  Usually, parents shouldn’t lose their kid, but all his fur is black and my room is dark except for the walls.  Hence, I need to call his name and look for his sparkling huge eyes in the black body.  Thus, I have been worn out from that.

Until now, I have been telling the stories like I’m despairing.  However, I also have good stories with him.  They might depend on people’s reaction.  His name is Gigi, which isn’t from Gigi Hadid because he’s a boy, I think so at least.  His name is from one of the Ghibli movies. That movie’s name is “Kiki’s Delivery”.  That movie has the story about one witch girl succeeding in a new town alone, and she has a black cat whose name is Gigi. I think that his real name is Gianluig, which is an Italian name.  By the way, Gigi is so cute when he is staring at my eyes without any moving.  When his mysterious eyes chase me in the black, my heart is grabbed by his cuteness and bit of fear.

In addition, I don’t want you to inform the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals because I have kicked his face unintentionally.  Of course, it is my fault, but he has made circles around my legs by running. That is like a motor gang circling a cute girl or a bullied child.  I can’t keep standing in one spot, so if I start moving, he keeps making circles around my moving feet.  Therefore, my feet kick his face.  However, he probably deserved that. He has held my head with his front leg and kicked my face with his back legs while I’m sleeping.  As his owner, I’m glad to shorten our distance in any way.  At the moment, I always want to kiss his forehead, but he refuses to let me kiss him, and his kicking is getting hard like a squall.  This is the best story between us.

In addition to our stories, he has many good stories with dogs and women.  He may pretend to be a sweet guy to only dogs and women, most of whom are under 30 because he behaves in the same way to old ladies as I do. Sometimes, I’ve gotten jealous of dogs and women because of his sweet meowing.

My life has been fulfilled as his owner. In the night, I always carry my fatigued body with some scratches to my bed, and the cool bed sheet heals my body. When I fall asleep, I always feel his cold paws on my cheek. Finally, those paws have become a hot annoying existence for me all night.

Since Gigi started residing in my room, I’ve almost forgotten what is happening outside of my room.

making lemons

These quarantine days have not been easy for anyone. The world has lived such a unique and stressful time with a lot of deaths, doubts and fear because of this terrible Coronavirus. To make this time even worse, we have a media system really interested in selling news anyway. Therefore, it is very important to find out some ways to be less stressed, such as praying as much as possible, meditating, practicing exercise, gardening and other things that make you feel better. I have already done most of these, but gardening is the one that literally started in this quarantine time.

My first inspiration to garden comes from the time when I got into a very stressful situation. The result of that busy life was an inflammation of the lining of my stomach (called gastritis) that made me suffer with throat ulcers, stomach pain and nausea for one and a half years. When I started to feel bad with those problems,  I went to my doctor and I did my first endoscopy, the result was just gastritis. The doctor prescribed expensive medicines, and after six months I didn't feel good yet, so I had another endoscopy and I took more medicine and I still felt bad, now I had chronic gastritis . Six months later, I did the third endoscopy, and I was worse than ever. The doctor asked me: “What happened to you? Now you have esophagitis, gastritis and duodenitis!”

I had the third endoscopy early in the morning. In the afternoon, I went to work in my cafeteria, and one customer asked what was happening to me too. I told him. He asked me if I had ulcers in my stomach, and I said that I did not have ulcers in my stomach. I just had ulcers in my mouth and in my throat. So he said that I could use the same recipe he used  to be  healed of the same problem.

The recipe was to drink pure juice of two lemons before going to bed and also in the morning on an  empty stomach (by fasting) for two or three weeks, and after feeling better, I should drink the juice of just one lemon every morning . He also said that I  should drink the juice with a straw not to damage my teeth. So, I started to drink that sour and strong pure lemon juice as my customer taught me. It was not a big deal! I was suffering a lot with stomach pains, vomit sensation and worse, I also could not inhale the air through my mouth because I had a bunch of ulcers in my throat. Everything I desired at that moment was not to feel those terrible sensations and be able to live and eat as a normal person!

From that day on I also made a great effort to avoid eating any other acidic fruits, sodas, ice cream, white bread, canned food,  milk, coffee, chocolate, sugar and oily food. Therefore, after drinking pure juice of two lemons with straw in the morning and at night with a straw and following a more strict diet, I got better, so I went to do my fourth and last endoscopy. I was totally healed.  Thank God!!!
Nowadays I do not have gastritis anymore, but I still have gastric reflux in the mornings (this happens when the gastric acid comes up to your mouth and makes you cough ), so I need to drink pure lemon juice every day to avoid this annoying cough and consequently I have new lemon seeds every day.

One more reason that has made me plant lemon trees is one story that I heard from an aunt of mine about people in Europe who used to spread fruit seeds along the side of the road to create a more green and delicious world. This story has made me think that I also could do something else with my lemon seeds. This has been in my mind but my busy life did not allow me till quarantine time, so I bought  some beautiful and colored flowers to plant in the garden in front of my house and I also decided to plant my lemon seeds in the pots that were from the flowers and I am growing them in my backyard.

Now my baby lemon trees have become my new passion, and I want to give them to my neighbors, friends and to everyone who comes to visit my house. Therefore, in order to put away negative sensations and fears that this terrible coronavirus has brought to most people around the world, I would recommend everybody  to discover what can bring joy for each one and makes it happens.

Natural Transformation

The day was Sunday. The phone ringing wouldn’t stop ringing.  So I had to answer the phone. My friend called me at 10 a.m. She told me that her friends would be going to paddle at Zilker park.  I felt lazy, but my boyfriend agreed with my friends, so we had to go. At noon I went to Zilker park with my friends. I saw a lot of cars in the parking lot. I walked down to the Colorado River. I saw a lot of people, kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, paddles, and life jackets. People were relaxing.  I saw someone wearing a hat. Someone was wearing sunglasses to protect their eyes. Someone was taking their dogs for a walk. I saw the registration point to rent a boat.  The officers forced us to take life jacket onto the boat, but we didn't wear them because we didn’t like the smell of them.  I wanted a long spatula that could paddle on both sides, but my friend said, “It is unbalanced.” “You must choose the small one,” I said. I smelled like sun lotion, fresh air, and weed. I could smell the lotion from me and my friends. I saw someone smoking. I felt natural and adventurous. I saw turtles, fish, ducks, birds, and dogs. They were swimming and flying. Some turtles were swimming. Some turtles were standing on the rocks. The weather was good. The water was cold. I touched it. I saw my friends jump into the water. My friends were enjoying the cold water.  I didn't want to get wet because I was afraid the phone and the camera would get wet. After I arrived, I touched the cool water. I jumped into the water because I felt hot. My feet touched the stone under the water. I felt good and relaxed. I saw cans underwater, someone had thrown them out. I told my boyfriend to keep them. I heard music. It was pop and dance music. I heard dogs bark. I heard birds sing. I saw people rowing, drinking, talking, laughing, and smoking.  Someone was fishing. I saw teenagers jumping from the bridge into the river (it wasn’t high).  They were happy on the weekend. I let my thoughts be with nature. In my head, I let go of everything. I felt relaxed with nature. I felt the positive energy in my body.

Quarantined Determination

I am going to talk about my  personal  good experience story. One day I thought about how to stay fit and healthy, which I couldn’t do earlier. At that time I was a little overweight, and I felt tired because my body had  swelling and also I felt low energy in my body. I am Anemic. The weight loss process is very challenging, but everyone wants to do it. There are many steps involved in this but the most important thing is to stick with it. And I promised myself.
The first step in losing weight was to get rid of all the greasy junk food in my house, and I had to adopt good eating habits. I eat only healthy crispy green vegetables, salad, milk and dry fruit. When I eat, first I check the food’s calories. I prefer low calorie food sometimes. I fast. I drink lemon water. I drink green coffee to help lose weight. I have shunned fried foods that have a lot of  fat.

The second most important step in losing weight is exercise. I  run every day for at least one hour, but it is easy to feel tired. I thought, “Oh my god!” when I reached my goal. The first  week is very hard. Then the  second week feels good.   I do yoga for twenty minutes. After exercise I feel fresh and cool and  raise my energy level and in a different mood. I feel happy and relaxed and calm.
Picture
Picture
Exercise is really good for health. For example, previously there was swelling in my body, but now that I do exercise, I feel much better. My goal was to lose twelve pounds in two months and I succeeded.  I never skip  my exercise even if it rains. I do exercise in my home now. I have almost lost sixteen pounds in  two months and three weeks.
I walk with my husband everyday. We enjoy walking and talking and spending time with each other. We walk in my neighborhood. There is a green space where we usually walk in the morning. We take deep breaths. The feeling of  the air filling  my lungs is magical and  encourages me to keep going.  We heard birds singing and we saw beautiful sunrises.  When we saw bright colors, it made me feel happy. When we walked and saw nature, I felt more peaceful.
In conclusion, health is the most important thing in our life. If  we enjoy our life, we will have a long happy life. I promise myself  I am going to continue walking my whole life. I would like to convince you to do fifteen to thirty minutes everyday of walking outside .The health benefits of walking are really amazing.

Changing My Routine

7/28/2020

What do people think about this period? I thought this period was a good opportunity to change my life. Why did I change my life? Because my life has been unhealthy.  I wanted to be fulfilled in my life and I don't want to get fat. I mean, I easily get fat, and it is difficult to maintain my body. So I have tried a lot of things.

At first, I changed my eating habits. I have never been careful about it. Most of the time, I was eating sweets, carbohydrates and high-calorie foods. These smells attract me. Therefore my health condition is sometimes bad, but I didn't try to change it because it's hard for me to limit my favorite foods. But this period gave me a good opportunity to rethink my eating habits. At the beginning of this period, I was feeling sick. Then I decided to change it. In particular, I tried not to eat carbohydrates, snacks and sweets. These are the fat factors. On the contrary, I tried to eat vegetables, protein, low calorie food and drink only water and a cup of coffee. These are generally good for human health and won’t make you get fat. So I try to eat these as much as possible.  As a result, I lost a little weight. And my health condition became better than before. I have come to think about nutrition when I cook for myself. These dishes taste good and smell very good. Thanks to that, I can cook many dishes. Changing it had a positive effect for me.

Another thing I want to change is my sleep habits. Now, on weekdays, I go to sleep by 11pm and get up by 7am. On weekends, I go to sleep by 1am and get up by 9am. Before, I used to go to sleep at about 5am and get up in the evening.  Usually the view I saw when I woke up was not blue. Or I didn’t get enough sleep. This affected my physical condition. It was difficult to spend time studying and exercising because I was too sleepy and lacked concentration. So I needed to change my sleep habits. After changing them, I could use my time effectively by making good sleep habits. And I saw a different view. It used to see a dark view but now I can see a bright view. That view changed me from a dark feeling to a bright feeling.  Also I can set up a proper schedule.  Therefore, I feel happy every day.

Next, I quit smoking about one month ago because I heard that smokers are prone to corona. Another reason is that I felt it wasn't necessary for a healthy life. When I was smoking, sometimes I was frustrated and lacking concentration when I couldn’t smoke. So I didn't think I could stop it, and I didn't even want to. Now that I have stopped it, my worries are that when my friend smoke next to me, I will want to smoke, and I sometimes get annoyed. But now I don't smoke anymore and that bad cycle is lost.

I can feel every day is fulfilling by changing my life, and I can spend more time studying and exercising. Corona has many negative effects, but it was a good opportunity to change my life. People tend to have bad lifestyles during this period, but it's a good period of opportunity depending on their own consciousness, so I think it was good to make an effort.  I will continue to live a fulfilling life.
